My dear Carne,
When I solicited at your request that His Royal Highness The Commander-in-Chief would be pleased to remove you to a Regiment likely to remain some time in India, it was in the firm belief that the 1/6th were destined to return to England this year, otherwise I most certainly would not have recommended removal - and as from the circumstances that have taken place since, and promotion of officers senior to you, you would have been beyond the pale of half pay, I regret it the more. However the die is cast and I can only hope,
